Atlanta Day Shelter For Women And Children

Mission:

The Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children is a nonprofit ecumenical organization whose mission is to ease the burden of homelessness, restore hope, and establish self-sufficiency through education and support services.

Purpose of Ministry:

Our mission is to restore hope and self-esteem in our guests by providing the tools they need to overcome their homeless situation and regain self-sufficiency. We offer job readiness programs, education stipends, medical care, computer training, childcare and early education programs, critical needs services, and mental health counseling. Each day we fill our rooms and share our hearts with an average of 140 women and children from counties all over Metro Atlanta. Over the course of a year we have the fortunate ability to make a major impact in the lives of close to 4,700 individuals.

Using the OHS grant:

The Computer Training Program will provide the educational resources that are vital to a woman’s success in the work place. Whether our homeless guests are applying for a position at a fast food restaurant, an administrative position in a large company, or a hospitality manager at a hotel chain each position requires the ability and skill set needed to operate a computer. Using the Computer Training Program, our guests will be able to compete with others who have had the ability and the educational opportunity to train on up-to-date and relevant computer programs/software. This program will consist of professional computer instructor-led classes focusing on Introduction to Computers and Typing, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  In addition, volunteers will open computer labs to provide basic instruction and assistance.

Volunteer opportunities:

We welcome volunteers Monday – Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. We have a variety of volunteer activities available ranging from preparing and serving meals to reading one-on-one with children to assisting in the computer training lab to sorting donations in one of our supply closets.

Child Evagelism Fellowship of Georgia

Mission:

"To reach boys and girls with the Gospel of Christ, disciple them in God's Word, and connect them with local churches."

Using the OHS grant:

Child Evangelism Fellowship of Georgia is using the $50,000 grant to develop a local Atlanta Chapter of CEF under the supervision and leadership of the State Office.  Our strategy is simple: recruit partnering church teams of volunteers and provide curriculum & professional training for those volunteers to reach outside the walls of their church to carry out the mission which is listed above.   This is accomplished through Good News Club (schools), 5 Day Club (summer), Truth Chaser Club (online or mail discipleship), and Christian Youth in Action (missionary leadership training for 15-22 year olds).

Volunteer opportunities:

Our ministry is built with volunteers! Opportunities for serving abound and are available to anyone with just a phone call to our State Office!
